Malala Room

A private, fully equipped meeting room for up to six people in the heart of Westminster.

Most venues treat a six-person meeting room as a minor booking; the smallest room gets the least attention. This leads to spaces that are under-equipped, undersized, or simply the corner of something larger that has been partitioned off. The Malala Room is a dedicated space with its own screen and enough room to think. At 4m x 3.7m, with a ceiling height of 3.4m, it doesn’t feel cramped. It comfortably fits up to six, the right number for the conversations that need a proper room, in a boardroom layout.

If your event includes a main room and a breakout, the Malala Room works well alongside any of our other spaces, available to hire separately for the same session.

Named after Malala Yousafzai

Every room at Mary Sumner House is named after a woman who changed the world. The Malala Room takes its name from the Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai. As a teenager, Malala campaigned publicly for girls’ right to an education and the violence within the Swat Valley, which was under Taliban occupation. In 2012, she survived an assassination attempt on her school bus. Just two years later, at seventeen, she became the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

She continues to campaign for girls’ education globally through the Malala Fund. Her courage and willingness to speak up, even at great personal cost, are exactly the kind of values to keep in mind when the hard conversations start.

What the room is for, and how it fits into a larger day

The Malala room is at its best when meetings need to be private, focused, and free from the feeling that someone might walk in halfway through. It functions perfectly for conducting appraisals, subcommittee meetings, redundancy consultations, job interviews, or any briefing that needs a more private setting than an open office.

It also works equally well for small planning sessions and group work, where a large room would swallow the energy. The Malala Room is ideal when people need to collaborate, rather than sit through presentations.

For organisers building a more complex day, the Malala Room can be hired alongside any of our other spaces. It works particularly well as a breakout space running alongside one of our larger rooms. Both rooms can be set up, staffed and catered independently, so the logistics of a multi-room event don’t fall on you to manage.
