Named after the American civil rights activist, the Rosa Parks Room is one of the versatile meeting rooms within the historic setting of Mary Sumner House.

The history behind our Rosa Parks Room

Rosa Parks is best known for one of the largest social movements in history, the Montgomery Bus Boycott. On 1st December 1955, Rosa Parks boarded a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, and instead of going to the back, which was designated for African Americans, she sat in the front. The bus driver asked her to move as the bus started filling up with white passengers, but she refused.

Following this, she became an active member of several organisations which worked to end inequality in the city. Rosa is honoured for her courage to challenge segregation and fight for racial equality though this room in our Grade II listed venue.
